Counselling and Selecting a Specialist

The benefits of working with a counsellor who specialises

It is beneficial to work with a counsellor who practices in a particular area or niche because expertise and specialised knowledge are acquired by the practitioner. A counsellor who specialises in a particular area will have enthusiasm for their chosen specialty. That’s not to say that they can’t help you with other issues, most often they can. But choosing a counsellor with a specialty means that they will have a more in-depth knowledge of the complexities of that particular matter, the issues involved and ways of dealing with it.

I specialise in grief and loss.

The sense of grief that can accompany not only a death but the loss of anything that is significant in a person’s life can never be underestimated. Nor should it be dismissed. In our society, we are coming to understand that any major change or loss can cause feelings of grief and leave us wondering how we are going to cope or, if what we are feeling is normal.

My areas of specialty within grief and loss include:

Divorce/relationship breakup

Death of companion animal

Life transitions including empty nesting, sandwich generation issues, menopause

Medical changes impacting on mental health and wellness

Caring for the carers of those impacted by changing physical health status

Retirement

Retrenchment

Relocation/expat issues
